The 33-year-old scored for the Grecians in the second leg of their play-off semi-final win over Colchester but he didn't feature in the final as Exeter lost 4-0 to Northampton at Wembley last month.

Fleet say that they beat a number of clubs higher up the football pyramid to Martin's signature.

Having come through the ranks at Manchester United, Martin earned a Premier League start for the Red Devils against Hull City in 2009 in a match Sir Alex Ferguson's men won 1-0.

Later that year, he was signed by Roy Keane at Ipswich and spent four years with the club.

His career then took him to Millwall and Northampton before Martin joined the Gills in 2016.

At Priestfield, his first season was hampered by injury but Martin made a quicker than expected recovery from a broken and dislocated ankle to play competitively again in February 2017.

Then-boss Ady Pennock made Martin captain for the 2017/18 campaign and he made another 39 appearances for the club, before he moved to Exeter.

Martin told the Ebbsfleet website he was looking forward to the new challenge under new boss Dennis Kutrieb as he signed.

"Dropping down two leagues is a totally new challenge for me but definitely something that I’m looking forward to," he said.

"I’m still open to learning.

"That’s the wonderful art of football, you never finish learning and I’m excited to start anew and get going here."

Fellow former Gills players Tom Hadler and Ben Chapman have been among Ebbsfleet's other summer signings ahead of their 2020/21 National League South season.
