Daryl McMahon is the new Ebbsfleet United manager.

McMahon succeeds Jamie Day, who was sacked by the north Kent club last week, and has signed a two-year contract at Stonebridge Road.

The 31-year-old said: "I'm delighted to have the job and I'm looking forward to it.

"It's obviously a big challenge and it's a big job to get first up but you've got to start somewhere.

"I've been at the club for nigh-on two years in various capacities, I know the club well and I know all the players here.

"I feel like I know what people want at this club - from the fans to the owners."

Fleet academy boss and former captain McMahon took charge of three games in November and December as caretaker manager following the sacking of Steve Brown.

McMahon left Ebbsfleet in January to sign for Boreham Wood but when Day was fired, Wood cancelled his contract to allow him to take charge of Fleet's final game of the season against Bishop's Stortford on an interim basis.

Ebbsfleet vice-chairman Peter Varney said: "It is essential that going forward we bring some stability to the club after the disappointment of last season. Daryl is a very bright young coach and a good man-manager and has shown his management ability in the four matches he was in charge last season.

"We won both league matches 4-0 and gave our best two performances of the season. We won and drew the other two FA Trophy matches. Daryl knows the squad and has put forward a plan to the board to hopefully make us a real force in the Vanarama National League South next season.

"We did consider other candidates but Daryl has the advantage over others of not needing several months to assess the playing squad and then proposing wholesale changes as happened under the previous manager."

The club received more than 100 applications from potential successors to Day but their prompt appointment will allow McMahon to talk to the Fleet's out-of-contract players before they go on holiday.

He has retired as a player and will continue to oversee the Fleet's academy system.
