'I felt like Gareth Bale' - Ebbsfleet's Bobby-Joe Taylor likens goal to Tottenham and former Real Madrid star

Ebbsfleet’s Bobby-Joe Taylor claimed his winning goal on Saturday was reminiscent of Gareth Bale.

Taylor arrived in the penalty area to head home Lee Martin’s cross to seal a 3-2 win over Hungerford in National League South.

And the popular 25-year-old suggested his first headed goal in senior football reminded him of the Tottenham and former Real Madrid star in his heyday.

“I don’t know what came into me – I felt like Gareth Bale,” said Chelsea fan Taylor. “Not that I’m as good as him, nowhere near it!

“I would love to watch it back. I can’t even remember how I headed the ball, I don’t even know if I closed my eyes or not to be honest!

“It was good, the build-up was good. I nearly had a pop at Rakish Bingham because I went for a one-two and instead of giving it back to me, he played an unbelievable backheel to Lee Martin. Credit to him for digging out a cross not knowing if I had continued my run.

“That’s my first senior headed goal, it was just about getting contact and when I saw it hit the back of the net, I was just delighted. I’m more pleased that we got the three points after the work we put in.”

Taylor was a man on a mission in the second half after it was his error that gifted Hungerford the chance to go 2-1 ahead.

Ebbsfleet were then reduced to 10 men just before half-time but Taylor said that the players always believed they could get back into the game.

He was the game's outstanding player, more than making up for the Fleet's numerical disadvantage with a superb display.

He said: “At half-time, I held my hands up and said with my experience I should get rid of the football and from then on in I knew I had a point to prove and to get something for us.

“We said we’ll stick together, the game plan didn’t change, we could move the ball and we all believed. That was the main thing, the next goal was important and I think I should have scored before we made it 2-2 as I miskicked it to be fair.

“We drummed in at half-time and even before the game, that we can’t keep saying we’ve been the better side and then losing the game or getting a point. We dug in deep with 10 men but we were in control.

“Credit to the team because going down to 10 men is always difficult but we believe and we’ve got a good group of lads here.”
