Keaton Young became a national champion for a third time at this month’s ABA National Junior Championships.
Young, 18, of Gravesend-based Leo’s Lions ABC, won a tough and well-fought contest against a strong opponent from Seven Hills ABC in Devon in the junior novice C class at the championships, held at Wigan’s Robin Park Leisure Centre.
“Keaton does help out from time to time with our little ones but, really, he’s concentrating on his own career,” said Leo’s Lions ABC head coach and founder Alvin Martin.
“I believe all the English national champions will fight the national champions from Scotland so that’s where we’re going next.”
Jack Haworth - from the nearby Star Kickboxing at the Apex Business Park in Gravesend - also came out on top.
Martin said: “It was a third national win for Keaton.
“We’re just trying to get some exposure for the two boys where they’re both from Gravesend - even though they’re at different clubs.
“It was Keaton’s fourth time entering. The first year, he got silver and, now, he has got three golds.
“He’s doing really well.”
Martin hopes other youngsters from Leo’s Lions will start to follow in Young’s footsteps soon.
“There’s a few boys we have had for a few years and we’re starting to get them out onto the circuit,” said the coach, who feels boxing should be taught in schools to help encourage better discipline.
“They’re coming through and, with boys like Keaton getting the club some exposure, maybe a few more will come along soon.”
