Ebbsfleet United striker Aaron McLean getting used to life in National League South says boss Daryl McMahon

Ebbsfleet boss Daryl McMahon has explained why striker Aaron McLean featured so little towards the end of last season.

McLean, who joined Fleet from Barnet in January, scored five goals in his first four appearances but didn't find the net again after February 16.

The former Peterborough, Hull and Bradford striker only started one of Ebbsfleet's final seven league matches and didn't even make the bench during the play-offs.

McMahon said: "He started really well. In the grand scheme of things, his goals won us 10 points which is good from six months.

"But to be honest, towards the end of the season, Charlie (Sheringham) was performing better.

"The outstanding forwards were Kedwell and Godden and that was seen in our player-of-the-year poll. I thought Charlie was performing better than Aaron at the time.

"I’ve got the added advantage of seeing them Monday to Thursday as well.

"Aaron’s a very good player and it is hard sometimes, coming into a group halfway through a season. He was coming into a team with a different pressure on it.

"I know Barnet’s a good club and Martin Allen’s a good manager but they’re probabaly looking around mid-table (in League 2).

"There’s no real pressure on them every week to perform so if you go out and don’t play that well on Saturday, sometimes it doesn’t matter because you’ve got next Saturday whereas playing for a team that is trying to be at the top of the league, trying to win promotion, every week counts, every minute counts.

"You’re always in the spotlight and always under pressure.

"It’s just getting used to that and I’m sure he’ll be ready to go again."
