Former AFC Wimbledon midfielder Alfie Egan agrees new deal at Ebbsfleet United but John Goddard departs

Ebbsfleet United have agreed a new deal with one midfielder while another departs.

The club have announced that midfielder Alfie Egan, 22, has signed on for a second season at the Kuflink Stadium but John Goddard is looking at options elsewhere.

Egan is the second signing for new manager Dennis Kutrieb after agreeing a deal with goalkeeper Jordan Holmes.

He joined Fleet last summer after leaving AFC Wimbledon and went onto make 25 appearances for the club.

He said: “To come back for another year is truly exciting. I’ve had a chat with Dennis, Damian (Irvine, the chief exec) and Steve (Lovell, the director of football) and I want to be part of next year’s plans.

“It’s clear we’re going to have a group with the same ambition, same goals and that can only be good for the club.”

Goddard was another newcomer last summer but said: "It’s not been an easy decision, I’ve had a couple of weeks thinking about things on a personal level about what I do next.

"It’s an odd time and frustrating for players and clubs with the coronavirus. I want to play at the highest level possible but things are still uncertain in football.

"I live in Reading so the location wasn’t ideal and now it’s a case of sitting down with my family and looking at the options. I’ve used lockdown to keep fit and improve even more after my injury so I’m looking forward to whatever the future holds.”

Fleet look set to be playing in the National League South division next season. Their relegation comes as teams in the divisions below, including Dartford, prepare to start their play-off campaigns.

A decision to end the season on a points-per-game formula dropped the team into the bottom three but the club has said they won’t be making a legal challenge to the decision.
