Aldershot Town 0 Ebbsfleet United 2 match report

Ebbsfleet extended their unbeaten run to seven league matches with a convincing win at Aldershot on Saturday.

It was a perfect away performance by Garry Hill's side, who controlled the game from start to finish.

Michael Cheek broke the deadlock with his fourth goal in three games before Danny Kedwell scored from the penalty spot to put a poor Shots side away.

Dave Winfield and Andy Drury missed the game after picking up injuries in the 1-1 draw at Maidenhead, so manager Hill made two enforced changes. Sam Magri was drafted into central defence alongside Jack King and Ebou Adams partnered Jack Payne in midfield while Dean Rance was fit enough for the bench.

The home side, for whom Marvin McCoy started against his former club, were only able to name three substitutes.

Ebbsfleet started at a high tempo, pushing Aldershot back into their own half and winning a succession of set-pieces.

Cheek latched onto Payne's through-ball and forced an early save from Will Mannion before a towering Kedwell header, from Magri's diagonal ball, almost ran for his strike partner Cheek.

Corey Whitely, playing in the hole behind the strikers, dragged a shot wide when the hosts failed to clear a Payne free-kick from the left.

Aldershot weren't seeing much of the ball and Kedwell threw himself at Payne's next delivery, although the Fleet skipper was penalised for his challenge.

Nathan Ashmore dealt comfortably with the Shots' first effort on goal, an Adam May shot from 25 yards, before scuttling out to stop Reece Grant running onto McCoy's neat pass down the inside-right channel.

But the visitors posed a real threat from dead balls, with Kedwell glancing a header just wide when Bush launched one from inside his own half.

Cheek then went round keeper Mannion and tried to square for Lawrie Wilson but Lewis Kinsella was on hand to clear.

Aldershot failed to clear yet another ball into their box midway through the first half and Payne rattled the crossbar with a fantastic volley from 25 yards.

The game was being played almost exclusively in the Shots half with Ebbsfleet bossing possession and keeping the home crowd quiet.

Aldershot were giving the ball away for fun but for all their territorial domination, Fleet didn't work Mannion enough in a one-sided first half.

May extended Ashmore at the start of the second half but Fleet deservedly made the breakthrough moments later.

It was classic centre-forward link-up as Kedwell flicked the ball into Cheek's path and he held off Gabriel Osho before finishing low beyond Mannion.

You just knew Cheek was going to score as he ran clear, such is the confidence he's playing with right now.

Aldershot, all at sea, headed a Kedwell cross against their own bar and Fleet felt they had a good shout for a penalty when Kedwell was grappled trying to convert the resulting corner.

Once again Ashmore was subjected to abusive chants from opposition supporters but the visitors delivered the perfect riposte in the form of a second goal on 66 minutes.

Whitely went past one defender in the box and was tripped by a second, with Kedwell sending Mannion the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Adams and Kedwell tried their luck from distance with neither hitting the target although it mattered not as the Shots struggled to create anything going forward.

Credit should go to Ashmore and his defence for another well-drilled display which earned a fourth clean sheet in five matches.

It was easy for Ebbsfleet in the closing stages and they should have made it 3-0 when Whitely made ground in midfield and linked nicely with Kedwell.

King hit the bar with a header and Kedwell blazed the rebound wide as Aldershot threatened to capitulate late on.

Myles Weston waltzed into the box and Adams, given the time to turn, forced a diving save from Mannion.

It could have been any score in the end with Fleet creating chances at will and giving the Shots nothing defensively.

They kept running hard right to the death and Kedwell set up substitute Luke Coulson in the last minute of stoppage-time for a shot which deflected wide.
