Ebbsfleet United caretaker boss Kevin Watson pushing claims to land job on a permanent basis

By Alex Birch

Ebbsfleet caretaker boss Kevin Watson’s chances of remaining in position on a more permanent basis were given another boost on Tuesday evening with Fleet moving clear of the National League’s basement position.

Victory over relegation rivals Chorley on a cold night in Lancashire made it three away wins in a row for Fleet, a sequence not matched since April 2018.

November begins with three consecutive home matches, and Watson remains upbeat about the future of the team, with or without him at the helm.

“Football can change overnight, as we often see,” Watson said, immediately after watching his side put four past the league’s bottom team.

“This has obviously happened with me being in the managerial position only a short time after joining the club.

"We’ve got a good little management team working together at the moment and we’ve put a good sequence of wins together.

“When we took over we had 10 points and were looking slightly adrift, but now we’re getting a lot closer to the teams above us.

"We have good players at this football club.

"They have a lot of ability and I know I can turn to any of them with confidence that a particular role can be done.

"That’s not to say we were in a false position when I took over. When you’ve got 10 points from 13 or 14 games, there’s no hiding place, but now there’s belief in our chances of moving up the table.”

Fleet take on another fellow struggler in Chesterfield at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.

Watson doesn’t know how long he’ll be in charge for, but is confident nonetheless of progress continuing to be made on the field.

“There’s no further news on my position, but no news is good news as they say,” he joked. “I feel like we’re doing what we can do to push the case.

"We can’t really do any more right now than keep winning games.

"We’ll go into the Chesterfield game with confidence.

"No doubt they will give us some problems, as all teams do at this level, but we should have the confidence to go there on Saturday, play the way we want to play, and hopefully a positive result will follow once again.”
