Ebbsfleet United manager Josh Wright reacts to 1-1 draw at home to leaders Hornchurch in National League South

Ebbsfleet boss Josh Wright took the positives from their draw with National League South leaders Hornchurch on Saturday.

The Fleet led through Josh Coley’s first-half opener but were pegged back when Harry Gibbs headed in after the break.

It was largely a positive display from Wright’s team against a team that had only dropped points once previously this season.

“I think we showed a lot of positives,” said Wright. “But there's still some of our play that is not us.

“You have to give credit to the opposition, Daryl (McMahon, manager) and his team, he's got his team working hard.

“He's got a lot of experience that he's kept hold of. He signed goals in his team and he signed a bit of flair and they're a decent outfit.

“We put in some good stuff but at the same time, there was stuff that just didn't look like us in terms of our style on the ball.

“That comes down to what we've got available in some ways. But make no bones about it, it's a point and a point's a point.

“The point adds to our tally come the end of the season. But we have to start backing these points up now with wins and three points.

“We've got a little bit to catch up, albeit it's only eight games. We can't be looking at league tables after eight games, but we're doing all right.

“That's two defeats in eight. Obviously, we've had four clean sheets out of that, which I'm big on.

“When you get one up, you need that second and third to kill them off. You need that killer instinct.

“On the flip side, flipping it around from the bottom end of the pitch to the top end, we're short, obviously. We've still got one or two missing, but that's not going to last much longer.”

Wright explained that while he was keen to keep the same starting line-up, his hands were tied to some extent as he only had 18 fit players to choose from at the weekend.

That will change next week with Maxx Manktelow’s loan due to end at Folkestone while some players are due to return from injury.

“If I'm honest with you, that's the 18 I've got at the moment,” revealed Wright. “There was no-one else available.

“So that was the 18 and I just felt we needed a little bit of continuity from the other night's clean sheet, a hard-dogged performance.

“We knew we were going to come up against a similar side and I like momentum. I like to gain that, as I say, continuity and keep it. We debated one or two but that's what we went with.”

Wright saw the point against Hornchurch as another step in the right direction.

“It’s a decent point,” he added. “Hornchurch are a good side and they’re doing something right as they’re top of the league for a reason. They’re big, physical and powerful.

“The goal that we conceded disappoints me as we knew they were a threat from set-pieces.

“I felt we could hurt them with our set-plays but we had to be strong defending them as they can be a threat with theirs.

“It’s another foundation for us to build on and it was a good spectacle between two teams who both had their moments.

“We went 1-0 up and we get in at half-time in the position that we want. I'm just disappointed because we had some moments where we could have maybe not so much finished the game off, but asked more questions of their goalkeeper or hit the target.

“It's a good point, we do want more. We want three points, of course we do. But we've come up against a team that haven't been beaten yet. They're beating most teams.

“They obviously nicked a late one the other night and they score a lot of late goals. At the same time, as much as we want three points, if you can't win, it's one of them, don't lose. So a point's a point and we take it on board and we move forward.”
