Gravesend gymnast Georgia-Mae Fenton off to the World Championships in Doha

Georgia-Mae Fenton is living the dream as she prepares to represent Great Britain at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.

Fenton, from Gravesend, will cap a phenomenal year when she takes on the sport’s elite in Doha next week.

The 17-year-old was shortlisted for Young Sports Personality of the Year having shone at major competitions already in 2018.

Fenton won gold on bars at the Commonwealth Games in April and was part of Team GB at the European Championships in August.

She said: “It’s amazing because all the hard work I’ve put in is starting to pay off.

“This has been a good year for me. I’ve managed to make all the majors, so it’s all going to plan.

“It is a bit crazy. When I was younger, I never thought I’d be in this position. I always wanted to be but I didn’t realise how hard it would be to get here.

“I’ve had to upgrade my skills from the Commonwealths. I’ve had to get those skills consistent as well as keeping my other work consistent.

“It has taken quite a lot of hard work and I’ve been building up my leg strength, too.”

Fenton and her team-mates have been training at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre ahead of the championships, which start next Thursday.

Her first taste of the World Championships came last year in Montreal.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Fenton. “I only did bars so I guess it put a bit more pressure on but I felt like I handled that pressure really well.

“I was just shy of a final but I was pleased to hit my first routine on a major stage and also come away with a skill being named after me.

“I feel like I’ve improved quite a lot since then, especially on floor and vault.

“The input from the strength and conditioning coaches at Lilleshall has helped me and I’ve been able to upgrade and work well.

“I’ve also got more experience, so I know what to expect on the bigger stage.

Fenton is joined on the British team by Ellie Downie, Becky Downie, Kelly Simm and Alice Kinsella.

The Downies are back involved after injuries while Kinsella and Simm competed alongside her at the Europeans.

Fenton said: “We’ve been together for about five weeks so we know each other well and we all get on. We’re all working hard.

"The team is always the main priority and whatever else comes with it is a bonus."
