Ebbsfleet manager Josh Wright refused to get carried away with their fantastic opening-day win at Dagenham & Redbridge.
The Fleet stunned the title favourites with goals in each half from Kwesi Appiah and Tom Dallison in National League South.
While the manner of his side’s performance and the three points justified the hard yards the Fleet boss demanded in pre-season, Wright was eager to stress it’s still early days – despite the confidence the result should give to his squad.
“It's only one game,” said Wright. “You can talk about starts after five or 10 games and we can talk about how good the start has been.
“It's just one game and we can't get too high and we can't get too low.
“I've stressed that before, win, lose or draw, you can't get too high and you can't get too low.
“But it will boost some confidence, it will give them that bit more belief again and it will prove that what they've produced in pre-season is exactly what we're about and what we'll continue to be about.
“Everyone always looks at results and I've stressed from the start in terms of pre-season, it really isn't about results. It's the work you do day-to-day at the training ground and around the place.
“They've put in, you wouldn't believe how much, an incredible amount of effort in terms of their hard work. Not just the running they have to do in pre-season, but the tactical side of things, the classroom stuff, and just the day-to-day work building that togetherness and feel-good factor.
“So to come out and produce something like that and get the result with it, that's only going to boost us with more confidence, togetherness and belief.
“It only leaves you in much better shape when you can get off to a good start, but it's one game.”
It was only a third league win in charge for Wright but his focus was already turning to this Saturday’s home game with Chippenham within minutes of the full-time whistle last weekend.
“Results in terms of the industry that we're in are everything,” he acknowledged.
“When you win, it's fantastic and, when you lose, it's the worst thing in the world and I really mean that. So, of course, it made me go home happier.
“But I will look back at this game on Sunday, I will study it just like my staff will.
“Then we will debrief it on Monday, we will look at the good stuff and we will look at the not-so-good stuff. We will go again next week to improve and step up again because we have to keep putting the foot on the gas.
“We can't just rest on our laurels, and just continue with how we think we're going to keep winning games. You have to keep improving, you have to keep striving.
“That's exactly what we'll be doing this week, coming back in and looking how we're going to beat Chippenham.
“We need to make sure we're at it again this week and all the games coming up because it's a really busy month and we have to keep backing it up.”
Wright’s team selection at Dagenham might have raised a few eyebrows, with Dallison picked in defence and Josh Coley partnering Appiah up front.
But the Fleet boss warned he won’t be afraid to make changes when the time is right.
“I see them every single day,” said Wright. “You'll pick different teams for different games, for different occasions, for home and away and whatever it might be.
“Every opposition poses something different. So sometimes a team selection, which if there were some surprises, it slightly surprises me. But at the same time, I picked a team to beat Dagenham.
“I will pick a team next Saturday to try and beat Chippenham. There's different reasons why someone's available or someone's more ready or someone's in a better position to play in that certain game.
“That's how I go about my business. I know about continuity and going with a team that wins but you have to think hard. You have to look deep and study, you have to try to see what's going to win you that game.
“That will continue throughout the season as we need a squad and I'm going to need everyone.
"Everyone who played on Saturday is honoured and in a nice position but those that didn't play are very unfortunate.”
Ebbsfleet are at home against another much-fancied side when they face Chelmsford on Tuesday night.
