Aldi in Herne Bay closed for four full days for refurbishment as part of nationwide investment programme

A branch of a supermarket giant is closed over four full days for a refurbishment as part of a massive nationwide investment.

Aldi, at King’s Road, Herne Bay, shut from 8pm yesterday (Saturday) and will let customers back from 8am on Thursday.

There are two alternative local branches at Canterbury and one at Whitstable.

The Herne Bay branch is one of 30 existing ones run by the German discount retailer being revamped on top of 10 new ones opening in the next 14 weeks.

Aldi, the UK's fourth-largest supermarket, now has more than 1,050 stores nationwide and is launching new ones in areas such as London, Yorkshire, the West Midlands and Wales.

This is part of Aldi's long-term target to reach 1,500 UK stores, It is investing £650 million in expanding this year alone.

Each new branch opening is expected to create about 40 new jobs.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: "We're targeting 40 new store openings in 2025, while many of our current stores will also be getting a refresh to enhance the customer experience.

“This means we can consistently offer the best value for money to even more shoppers across the UK."

Aldi believes it is Britain's best-paying supermarket. Store assistants got an increase earlier this year, with hourly rates rising to at least £12.75 nationally. It goes up to £12,.85 in September.

For the National Minimum Wage the hourly rate is £12.21 for over-21s.

Aldi is also the only supermarket to offer all workers paid breaks, worth about £1,370 annually for the average store colleague.

The nearest alternative Aldis to Herne Bay are at Sturry Road and St Andrew’s Close in Canterbury and Prospect Retail Park in Whitstable.
