Membership prices at a swanky new leisure club in Kent have divided opinion after being revealed for the first time today.
‘Luxury’ fitness chain David Lloyd’s latest site in the county is under construction in Herne Bay and is due to open this winter.
Introductory memberships started being offered today at £144 a month - with a £50 joining fee - with the cost likely to be higher when the centre eventually launches.
Partners can also be added to the ‘Platinum’ deal for £104 a month, making use of the site’s gym, heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis and padel courts, and a luxury spa.
But despite the many facilities on offer, the prices have been branded “absolutely ridiculous” amid a lively social media debate.
Tracy Bishop shared the welcome offer on a local residents’ group on Facebook, adding: “That’ll be a NO from me then I’m afraid.”
Ben G agreed, writing: “£248 per month for me and my other half. I knew it would be steep but that is absolutely ridiculous.”
Referencing the retail development originally planned for the site, Beca Magness added: “Definitely should have been a B&M instead!”
But many say the prices should not have come as a surprise, with other David Lloyd clubs – including two in Kent - charging similar fees, and sometimes more.
A platinum membership at the chain’s Dartford site currently costs £199 a month, and £154 at its club in Kings Hill.
On the Herne Bay prices, Ollie Turk wrote: “What did you expect? It’s a David Lloyd club. Joined up this morning, well worth the dollar.”
Jamie Cooper admitted he was anticipating spending even more, adding: “It’s actually cheaper than I was expecting.”
The introductory offer, which ends tomorrow, also allows members to add under-twos for an extra £4 a month and children aged three to 18 for £34 a month. Both require £10 joining fees.
It is expected further membership options will be unveiled by David Lloyd ahead of opening day.
Stuart Caswell, the new club acquisitions director at David Lloyd Club, said: “Works are progressing well at our new David Lloyd Herne Bay Club and we are looking forward to welcoming our new members when doors open later this year.
“The new club will become a complete leisure destination with an active community of all ages.”
David Lloyd is planning on opening what will be the chain’s fourth Kent club in Ashford next year.
