Police say they were called to the scene at about 11.10am, after receiving a report "old ordnance items had been found".

A spokesman for the force said: "We attended and the items were dealt with by explosives experts, who were also at the scene."

Officials from Kent County Council, which runs the recycling centre, confirmed the site had been evacuated and handed over to the police when they arrived.

It has since reopened.
