Subway to open restaurant in Herne Bay

News that Subway will open its first branch in a Kent town is expected to entice more big-name chains to set up shop nearby.

The sandwich-making giant has revealed it will move into a site in William Street, Herne Bay, by plastering “coming soon” signs in its front window.

The landlord of the building, who asked not to be named, says the deal was signed off on Friday, while adding interest was also received from burger restaurant Wimpey and a yoga studio operator.

She believes the arrival of the eatery – which is expected to employ up to 15 people – will boost trade in the area.

“It’s going to increase the footfall because they’re really popular,” the landlord said.

“And once you get one big name in the town, then you get others following.”

Cosy Cat Café used to be based in the building, prior to its move to the former Hays Travel shop in the High Street towards the end of last year.

In the 1970s it had been home to a gardening supplier, before Scott’s Newsagents launched in the site, before later relocating to a store a few doors down.

The owner of the building says she was close to agreeing terms with Subway for it to take on the shop about five years ago, but the deal fell through at the 11th hour.

“Subway approached me again when they knew the site was empty after Cosy Cat moved out last year,” she added.

“We were in talks for about two or three months. I did have other interest, but this was best because it’s a longer lease of 15 years.

“Some people have mentioned the impact it could have on local cafés, but going to a café and having a coffee and cake is a totally different experience to going to a Subway.”

A sign placed in the shop's window this morning warns that work to fit out the branch is due to take place.

This comes after McDonald’s revealed to KentOnline earlier this year it is eyeing up a plot at Altira Park in Broomfield.

The parcel of land is the subject of plans put forward by developer Kitewood for more than 15,000 sq m of retail, food and beverage facilities, industrial units and 70 homes.
