It was reported that three adults - two women and a man - boarded the 921 school bus, which was taking pupils home from Spires Academy, near Canterbury.

One of the women was later seen covered in blood, having suffered injuries thought to have been self-inflicted with a knife.

A Kent Police Twitter account posted last night: "Officers have arrested three people following a disturbance on a bus earlier today in Broomfield, Herne Bay."

Passers-by reportedly saw a number of police and paramedics near the bus stop outside the former Plough Inn in Hunters Forstal Road.

An onlooker took to Facebook to say a group of pupils attempted to help, adding "it was so brave of them".

'Officers are currently liaising with the school to ensure any children who witnessed the incident receive appropriate support...'

Concerned parents have also questioned how the adults were allowed to board the bus, with one describing the incident as "terrifying".

Another posted on social media: "This is awful. School buses should be for kids only.

"This is a safeguarding issue surely."

A police spokesman confirmed officers were called to the scene at about 4pm after a man and two women "reportedly became abusive after boarding a school bus".

A 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and remain in custody while enquiries continue.

Another woman, aged 22, was also detained at the scene and passed into the care of healthcare professionals.

The spokesman said: "Officers are currently liaising with the school to ensure any children who witnessed the incident receive appropriate support."

A Stagecoach spokesman stresses there were "no reports of any harm or injury to any other passengers travelling on this school-time service".

He also says two PCSOs will travel on the route today, in a bid to "reassure children who use this bus".

"There was a disturbance on the number 921 bus yesterday afternoon which resulted in the arrest of three individuals," he added.

"Our driver was able to ensure that these individuals were not on the bus when the police arrived at the scene.

"Public transport is a safe way to travel, and incidents such as this are extremely unusual."
