The firm has confirmed it will dig up the carriageway to carry out investigation and maintenance works.

It is understood the sewage pipe is uncharted and may potentially be clogged, requiring action.

The official diversion route for the High Street will see traffic sent back to the A2290 and the B2205.

The one-way system on Beach Street will be suspended during the works, with drivers encouraged to use Central Parade and Mortimer Street or Station Road and Kings Road.

Crews will be working extended hours to speed up the process, operating between 7.30am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and from 8am to 6pm on Sundays.

If all goes to plan, the road should be reopened by the end of the Easter half-term, with it decided this would be the best time to do it due to lower traffic levels.

A Southern Water spokesperson said “Our teams will being carrying out sewer investigations and maintenance work at High Street and Beach Street, Herne Bay.

“Workers will investigate a partially blocked sewer and aim to have a free-flowing sewer when the work is complete.

“This will involve the closure of the B2205 between 6 April and 21 April, for the work to be carried out safely.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause residents and commuters.”
