Herne Bay joint boss John Embery looks ahead to Bostik South East game against VCD

John Embery believes Herne Bay merely have to carry on doing what they’re doing to finally pull clear of the Bostik South East relegation zone.

Joint boss Embery admitted he was disappointed Bay let a 2-0 lead slip in Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Guernsey but says the players should not lose sight of the bigger picture.

He said: “It was two points dropped definitely, but it’s five games unbeaten and 11 points out of 15 so we’re pleased with that.

“It’s our best run of the season in terms of continuous wins and draws and we’re at that stage where every point counts.

“If you avoid getting beaten you’re going to get at least a point and that that’s how you’ve got to look at it.

“The table is so congested, especially in the middle that the situation can change quite quickly.”

To illustrate Embery’s point, just four points separate Bay, in 16th, from East Grinstead, five places higher, and they only trail 10th placed Ramsgate by six points with a game in hand.

He added: “We’ve just got to keep on playing the way we’re playing, keep the desire and belief.

“Courage isn’t always about being strong in the tackle, it’s about being brave enough to keep putting your foot on the ball and play the way you want to play.”

Bay travel to seventh-placed VCD on Saturday and hope Connor Wilkins will be fit after going off with a turned ankle against Guernsey.

Wilkins, just turned 20, has been one of Bay’s most consistent performers this season and Embery said: “Connor has been brilliant. Since he’s gone in at centre-half he’s really started to believe in his own ability and when he’s gone back into midfield he’s understanding the game far more.”

Embery praised the contribution of the two Dannys, Leonard and Rumbol, the latter having taken on added responsibility while club captain Ben Gorham is away playing in the FA Vase for Canterbury.

Tony Mills has been forced to resign as Bay vice-chairman after his position was made untenable by what the club have called ‘inappropriate actions'.

A statement released by the club on Tuesday said Mills, who was also a director, ‘had grossly overstepped his position with inappropriate actions to a level that made his role within the club untenable.’

It added: ‘After our discussions we feel it not appropriate to reveal any further details and we will not comment further on the situation.

‘The club would like to thank Tony for all his hard work and commitment.’
