HERNE BAY youngster Andrew Magro has been picked for the England Under-16 hockey squad.

Magro, who turned 16 last month, came through a series of trials to win his spot in the 20-strong squad, which also features Canterbury Hockey Club’s Chris Pryce.

He will take part in a five-day residential training camp this month and hopes to feature in international tournaments at Easter, and in July.

Magro, a member of Herne Bay Hockey Club where he came through the youth system, he has been a regular member of their first team this season, playing at right-back.

He has represented Kent and the South East for the past four years, with the county squad remaining undefeated in regional championships during that time.

He has also captained the South East team, and skippers his school first XI, at Barton Court, Canterbury.

Kent have four players in the national squad - Ashley Jackson (Tunbridge Wells) and Chris Bassano-Harper (Rochester Maths School) are the others - giving them the best representation of any county.
