Prolific Herne Bay striker Mike Salako sends message as he leaves club; New player-manager Liam Friend pays tribute to forward

Prolific striker Mike Salako is to leave Herne Bay.

Salako made a big impact at Winch’s Field, having made his debut in September 2023.

He ended the 2023/24 season with 27 goals as Herne Bay earned a eighth-placed Isthmian South East finish under manager-son management duo Steve and Mark Lovell.

Unsurprisingly, the exploits of Salako caught the eyes of many, including a National League South side last summer.

He turned those offers down as he stayed put and, while Herne Bay largely struggled in their 2024/25 campaign, finishing 16th, Salako contributed a further 23 goals.

The club confirmed in a statement on Monday night that Salako will leave upon the expiration of his contract.

“After much thought, I have decided to depart the club to pursue new opportunities closer to home,” said 30-year-old Salako, who lives in Essex.

“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who makes this club special - the staff, volunteers, media team and, of course, the incredible Herne Bay faithful. Your support and dedication never goes unnoticed.

“I want to also add a mention to the new manager, Liam Friend.

“He's been instrumental to my success at the club, both on and off the pitch. I wish him the very best of luck with his new role.

“This club will always hold a special place in my heart.

“Thank you for everything.”

Bay player-boss Friend said: “Mikey's actions over the last weeks really do back up his words to the fans.

“He truly does love the people and the club. His performances and goals mean he will always be welcome back to Herne Bay.

“From both myself as a team-mate and a manager, I would like to send a massive thank you to Mikey from everyone at the club.

“We wish him all the best as he moves to a club closer to home.”

The much-travelled Salako, whose previous clubs include Brightlingsea Regent, Basildon United, Hullbridge Sports, Corinthian-Casuals, Tooting & Mitcham, Walton & Hersham and Bowers & Pitsea, even broke a club record from their Isthmian League tenure earlier this year.

He bagged his 44th open play goal in March’s 5-1 win at Erith Town.

Wideman Theo Osinfolarin and defender Sinn'Kaye Christie have said they have left Herne Bay on social media, although the club are yet to confirm their retained and released list.
