Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for action after blocked drains led to homes and businesses flooding.

A bad storm last month left stagnant water in Hythe's High Street and Chapel Street, which then invaded shops, a pub and some homes.

The fire service was called out twice and sandbags were also installed outside some businesses, including Terry and Kent newsagents.

Owners spent hours clearing the dirty water, leaves and debris from the buildings overnight and the next day, with some having to delay opening or even missing work to take part in the clean up.

The flooding was blamed on the town's blocked drains, which meant the rainfall had no where else to go.

Lavinia Asquith, owner of The Curvy Boutique, has launched a petition calling on Kent County Council (KCC) to clear the drains, which has attracted more than 710 signatures so far.

The online petition read: "We have recently suffered bad flooding once again in Hythe.

"The High Street and many other roads have been affected.

"The stress, upset and cost to many businesses and residents is totally unacceptable.

"My business in the High Street has been badly affected, it is soul destroying!

"It's so important to keep the High Street going for the local economy.

"Many businesses are independent and this has hit them financially.

"Part of this issue is the blocked drains and drainage system that needs attention by Kent County Council.

"I am hoping they will take notice of this petition. Save Hythe from the floods!"

KCC workers were seen in the area earlier this week, but it is unclear whether the drains have been cleared.

Mrs Asquith, 53, said: "We are hopeful this will be enough to prevent any more flooding in the future.

"It's sad I have had to go through so much to get the drains cleared. This is something that should be carried out annually."

Mrs Asquith added that she still plans to put a claim into KCC for damages - which includes her ruined flooring and loss of income after having to close her shop after the flood.

Kent County Council has been approached for a comment.
