A UNANIMOUS vote saw a town council reject plans for 1,000 homes on a former quarry site.

The plans for a giant estate at Nickolls Quarry, out near Palmarsh to the west of Hythe, were objected to on a number of grounds at a packed meeting on Thursday.

West Hythe councillor Richard Carroll said: "We took it down on the grounds that we don't have the road infrastructure here in Hythe, it is on an area of significant flooding risk, it's a danger to wildlife, it puts the security of one of the country's top military ranges at risk and it is in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

"The A259 cannot take it. They claim that only 481 cars, out of 1,000 houses, will use the road in rush hour and 10 per cent of them will be heading for Dymchurch."

The council rejected those figures and turned the plans down. However, while Hythe Town Council's view does carry weight, the final decision will be taken by Shepway District Council's development control committee.

Whatever their decision, there are likely to be appeals.
