Hythe Town boss Steve Watt concerned by form of goalkeeper Will Godmon

Hythe boss Steve Watt is puzzled by Will Godmon’s early-season form after two more mistakes from his goalkeeper.

Godmon was responsible for both goals in the Cannons’ opening day defeat by Corinthian.

And he held up his hands again after gifting Ramsgate a 2-0 lead at Reachfields on Bank Holiday Monday.

Godmon was beaten by a wide free-kick from Lee Prescott, and he also failed to deal with Jordan Chiedozie’s free-kick down the middle of the goal.

Chiedozie scored again in the second half as Hythe lost 3-0.

Cannons boss Watt said: “Ramsgate fully deserved to win, they were the better side, but we’ve given them the first two goals.

“The first one is a cross from a free-kick - nobody could work out how it went in - and the second one’s a good strike but it’s straight down the middle of the goal.

“Take nothing away from Ramsgate but when your goalkeeper is at fault for two goals there’s not much you can do.

“I don’t want to kill him but again they’re two you’d expect him to save - simple as that.

“He’s having a tough time, like players do, and maybe he’s lacking a little bit of confidence.

“He’s held his hands up after the game but you can’t keep holding your hands up.

“It doesn’t change my opinion that we deserved to lose but everyone knows that goals change games.”

Watt felt Hythe, playing their fourth game in 10 days, were feeling the effects of recent matches.

They needed a replay to get past Westfield in the FA Cup, blowing a 2-0 lead in the first game and having Kane Phillip sent off before drawing 3-3.

Hythe players got home in the early hours after winning Tuesday night’s replay 3-1 and came from a goal down with 10 men to win 2-1 at VCD on Saturday, Jordan Sarfo and Scott Doe on target after Noel Leighton’s red card.

Watt said: “It was one game too many against Ramsgate. It wasn’t the boys’ fitness that was the problem, more the situations we put ourselves in prior to Ramsgate.

“We had 10 men the week before against a really athletic, attacking side. We had to get through a replay on Tuesday night where some of the boys didn’t get home till 2am and then on Saturday we played a large chunk with 10 men and it took a big effort to turn that around and win.

“We just looked tired. You could see early on we didn’t have our usual intensity.”

Hythe host Ascot United of the Combined Counties League in the FA Cup first qualifying round this Saturday.

The Cannons are missing five players, including suspended duo Leighton and Phillip, and Alex Brown, who’s away.

They’ll struggle to fill their seven-man bench and Watt could even ask assistant boss Nathan Elder to register as a player.

“We’ll probably have three subs, which isn’t ideal,” said Watt. “I may have to ask Elds the question, even if it’s to go on in case we need him.

“Do you know what, he’d still put himself about.

“I’m expecting a really tough game. Just because they’re lower league, we won’t be taking them lightly.”
