DIY giant Wickes could be sold as parent company Travis Perkins looks to streamline business

A major DIY chain could be sold by its owners as part of a streamlining by its parent company.

Wickes, which has more than 200 stores nationwide - including outlets in Ashford, Maidstone, Sevenoaks, Broadstairs, Sittingbourne, Chatham, Tunbridge Wells, Folkestone and Gravesend - is part of the Travis Perkins Group.

It has confirmed it is looking to "simplify and streamline" the business and will "review options" with regard the DIY chain.

It is understood this could see the Wickes chain sold as part of a on-going review of its operation over the coming years - although nothing is believed to be imminent.

Like other DIY retailers, it has faced "challenging" conditions in the market.

Travis Perkins says it will focus on trade customers as it looks to stabilise and grow amid challenging conditions.

'The board will also look to review the options for maximising the value of Wickes'

John Carter, Travis Perkins CEO, said:“We have developed a clear plan to focus on delivering best-in-class service to our trade customers, and to simplify the group to reduce complexity, speed up decision making and reduce costs.

"Our trade businesses hold strong positions in attractive markets, and these initiatives will enable us to concentrate our management time and capital in the highest returning areas.

"In the short term, management will also focus on strengthening the performance of Wickes and capitalising on its clear competitive advantages in the DIY, small trade and kitchen and bathroom markets.

"As it is a predominantly consumer focused business, the board will also look to review the options for maximising the value of Wickes in the medium term."
