BAE Systems in Rochester to help build Aerion AS2 Supersonic business jet - the first it's worked on since Concorde

BAE Systems has landed a major contract to supply a control system for a new supersonic business jet.

It will be the first time the Rochester site has worked on a commercial supersonic jet since Concorde.

It will work on the flight control system of Aerion Supersonic's new AS2 jet - a private aircraft capable of hitting speeds up 1,000mph at 57,000ft.

The jet goes into production at the firm's global headquarters in Florida in 2023.

The flight control system development will take place at BAE's sites in New York and Rochester.

Ehtisham Siddiqui, vice president and general manager of controls and avionics solutions for BAE , said: "We are leveraging decades of expertise and advanced technologies to architect a flight control system that will enable the future of flight."

Concorde, the world's first supersonic passenger service, was retired in 2003 after a crash in Paris in which all passengers were killed. It was capable of getting from London to New York in just three and a half hours.
