Claiming to be the only objective data-driven influence study into the UK tech sector, Upnor-based Zoe Cairns, founder of ZC Social Media, is ranked at number 86.

The 2019 list has a record number of women on the list, rising from 24% two years ago to 34% this year.

Number one was Emily Gosden, energy editor at The Times.

Mrs Cairns, who has run her business for the last nine-and-a-half years, said: “The list is different as it’s not just by followers, it was down to engagement and how many times those listed appeared in this media so it’s a well researched list.”

Behind the successful ZC Live one day digital and social media event, which took place in Rochester in May, the businesswoman took an unusual route into specialising in social media.

“I was previously in the mortgage business and when the recession hit in 2010 we were lacking clients so I started using Facebook to join groups where my target audience were hanging out and started engaging and generating clients.”

It led her to leave the business shortly afterwards and create her own agency which now serves a variety of clients on either retainers or bespoke social media campaigns.

Clients have included Ann Summers, Nato, Mercure Hotels, and the Department for Trade and Industry.
