Tecomak celebrates 50th anniversary

Tecomak Ltd, a Kent-based company that played a leading role in keeping hospitals running during the Covid-19 pandemic, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The business was founded on October 2, 1974 by Henry Black, the grandfather of the current Tecomak owners. Mr Black previously worked for a fume cupboard manufacturer, before setting up on his own.

Financial director Ross Black, one of the founder’s grandsons, said: “From our original beginnings, the company evolved to supplying a full range of lab furniture and fittings to provide complete refurbishment solutions for both education and industry.”

Over the years Tecomak has moved into several different areas, including school furniture and Local Exhaust Ventilation systems, cleanroom validation and decontamination. In 2018, all the various branches of the company were brought together under the Tecomak Environmental Services banner.

Mr Black added: “Covid was a turning-point for our industry, as people generally started to pay more attention to air movement and ventilation. As a result, we did not furlough anyone; we were working flat out in the build-up to the main outbreak, helping hospitals by providing key workers to keep them running.

“We have taken on another seven members of technical staff since the start of COVID and could easily take on more. They are based all over the south-east and as far north as Manchester, helping around 800 clients every year.”

The company, originally based in Kingston-upon-Thames, moved to Tonbridge in the early 1990s. It has nearly doubled in size over the years and now has 40 employees. These include 15 full-time engineers, with the remainder a mix of office staff and hybrid roles (both site- and office-based) with a core team of four directors.

Tristan Baker-Beall, the company’s managing director, added: “We are thrilled to celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, marking a significant milestone for our company. Our growth and success would not have been possible without the dedication and loyalty of our exceptional team, for whom we are deeply grateful.”
