At one point there was 13 miles of queuing traffic as the emergency services closed off two lanes, with drivers being delayed for more than an hour.

As of 4.30pm, the lanes had been reopened but severe delays remained for at least another hour.

The problems on the anti-clockwise carriageway were not helped by a second crash, which happened just before 3pm, this time near at Junction 3 for Swanley, closing one lane.

And an earlier broken down car, also anti-clockwise at Junction 2, the Darenth Interchange, also held drivers up.
