POLICE have issued a warning to parents after a man tried to lure a young schoolgirl into his car.

The attempted abduction happened in School Lane, Higham, near Gravesend, at around 8.30am yesterday as the 10-year-old walked to school.

The man asked the girl if she wanted a lift but when she refused he got out of the car and walked towards her. The girl ran away and immediately reported the incident.

PC Alison Duffort, community beat officer for Higham, said: "She has been extremely brave."

The officer said although such incidents are unusual she is urging parents and school to remain vigilant and report anybody suspicious or unusual to the police immediately.

The man was described as white, aged between 30 and 50 years, tall and of thin build. He had short black hair and a round face with a goatee beard. He spoke with a deep voice and had a local accent.

Anyone with information is asked to contact North Kent Police on 01474 331055 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
