A biker has described the horrifying moment he was hit by van in Maidstone.

Julian Allerhead, 54, suffered serious fractures after a Ford Transit van cut across him and clipped his bike on the A229 Fairmeadow.

He suffered fractures to his leg, collarbone and arm, but the van driver did not stop.

Now police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, on Monday, April 4.

Mr Allerhead, from Gravesend, said: "I kicked the bike from underneath me because I didn't want the weight of the bike on top of me.

"I span on the road and ended up hitting the kerb which has broken my collar bone, broken my right wrist, and then down the left side it's broken the knee cap, then below the knee it's shattered the leg.

"If I'd been responsible for something like that I'd have stopped straight away and I think any normal person would do. I just don't feel it's right. He must have felt the impact on his van anyway.

"A lot of people don't pay attention to motorcyclists. I think, having been riding for fifteen years, you have got to ride defensively, and you've got to look at least 300 metres in front of you. When this individual pulled in front of me I just didn't have any time to react whatsoever."

PC Dan Barker said: “It was approaching rush-hour and the road would have been busy. There would have been a lot of people around who I hope may have seen what happened.”
