Police cordoned off a Kent train station before today's rush-hour after a man was found dead on a platform.

Staff at Canterbury West railway station found the man collapsed at 5.12am.

Police and emergency service were called and the station was closed.

One platform was reopened and then at 8.30am the station was fully reopened.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Rail staff reported finding a man being collapsed on a platform.

"BTP and Kent Police officers attended alongside paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service, but the man was declared dead at the scene.

"The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokesman for train operator Southeastern said: "Canterbury West station has now re-opened and has been fully operational since around 8.30am.

"We did have to close the station entirely at one point but were soon able to open one platform and then the second."

"Obviously with any type of incident like this, there is a knock-on effect but we hope that within the next few hours, all services will be running on time."

No problems were being reported on Southeastern's High Speed or mainline trains at 9.40am.
