GREGORY CARROLL: pleaded guilty to robbery and wounding

A ROBBERY victim suffered serious wounds after he spotted one of his attackers two days later and hit out at him, a court heard.

One of the robbers, Gregory Carroll, reacted by repeatedly smashing a bottle over Glen Walling's head, causing him deep cuts.

Carroll, of The Railway Hotel, Balmoral Road, Gillingham, was jailed for four years and four months after admitting robbery and wounding.

Maidstone Crown Court heard that Carroll, 37, and another man went to the victim's home in Chatham on November 4 last year.

Bridget Todd, prosecuting, said the pair pushed passed other residents and went upstairs. Carroll was armed with a baseball bat and his friend had a knife.

Mr Walling ran into his room but Carroll chased after him, made threats and "swung the bat with great force". It struck his face and forearm.

Carroll kept asking: "Where's the gear? Tell me or I'll shoot you. I've got an 8mm in my pocket."

Miss Todd said the victim told Carroll he did not know what he was talking about and said he just lived there. He tried to bluff by saying they would go downstairs to get the drugs from the basement.

They went to the ground floor. Mr Walling then continued to protest that he did not know where the drugs were. The second man ordered him to hand over his cash card. The two then left.

Two days later, said the prosecutor, Mr Walling saw Carroll sitting on a bench and went over and punched him in the face.

Another man struggled with the victim and they fell to the floor. The man sat on Mr Walling and repeatedly punched him.

Carroll smashed a bottle on Mr Walling's head. He then took the neck of the bottle and hit the victim on back of the head with it, saying he was going to kill him.

Mr Walling was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital, where a number of deep cuts to his head, cheek and neck were treated.

Carroll at first denied the robbery. He said he had drunk half a bottle of cider and smoked cannabis when he overreacted and attacked Mr Walling.

Kerim Fuad, defending, said Carroll had taken drugs for some time and had a long and unattractive list of previous convictions.

He had been attending Manor Road addiction clinic in Chatham and had also been taking anti-depressants.

"He is an extremely dishonest man when the need for addiction rears its ugly head, but he is rarely a violent one," said Mr Fuad.

Deputy Judge David Croft, QC, said of a letter Carroll wrote to the court: "It is an impressive document and I accept that it reflects your present feelings. But these offences are grievous and serious.

"The evidence is clear, that you went there that day, armed yourself - you must have known that your colleague was also armed - and, having failed to find the drugs, you then stole the card.

"You went so far as to threaten your victim with shooting. I accept, of course, that you didn't have a gun, but you were, in fact, threatening to kill him."

The judge said of the wounding: "You repeatedly thrust a broken bottle into his face and head."

Carroll was jailed for three years and four months for the robbery and a year consecutive for unlawful wounding.
