A man accused of trying to start a fire at DIY store B&Q in Maidstone has made a brief court appearance.

Benny Dighton, of Chelmar Road, Chatham, is charged with attempted arson with intent to cause damage and endanger life on the May Bank Holiday Monday.

The 27-year-old was remanded in custody until July 9, when he will enter a plea.

He was arrested after staff found preparation of a fire in the wood aisle at the store.

Two days earlier, 80 firemen tackled a massive blaze which almost destroyed Homebase at Quarry Wood industrial estate in Aylesford.

About an hour later, staff at B&Q in Larkfield put out a fire in the lighting section.
