Burglars target frail widow

POLICE have described the burglary of an 89-year-old widow as "deplorable". The frail woman, who lives alone, was moving between her sitting room and kitchen at about 6pm on Saturday when she discovered two men in her home at Cuckoo Lane, Brenchley, near Tunbridge Wells

Insp Simon Wilshaw, community crime reduction co-ordinator for West Kent Police, said the pensioner initially thought the men were expected visitors but when she realised they were not she asked them to leave.

The victim, who has trouble walking, later discovered £40 and several store cards missing from her bag.

The first man is white, aged about 30. He was wearing a dark blue coat, hat and Dr Marten-style boots. The second man is also white, in his 20s and slim. He was wearing a red baseball cap and light coloured jacket.

Insp Wilshaw added: "We deplore this sort of crime which targets the vulnerable. We want people to remember that no matter how plausible a caller may seem they should always check them out. The genuine caller will not mind waiting."

Anyone with information should call West Kent Police on 01732 740055 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
