Video: Canterbury Rotary
Club 2010 charity duck race.

More than £5,500 has been raised
for local and international charities thanks to 3,500 rubber ducks
floating down the River Stour.

The Canterbury Rotary Club annual
duck race on Saturday attracted huge numbers in Westgate Gardens,
who followed the bath time friends down the river from Toddler’s
Cove to Tower House, in a time of just under 20 minutes.

Duck number 556, belonging to
Christopher Gilbody, just crossed the finishing line ahead of the
chasing pack.

The son-in-law of city councillor
Rosemary Doyle landed himself a first prize of £250.

In the corporate race, red duck
number 10 saw Paul Roberts Architects take the honours and receive
a box of champagne.

John Harris from Rotary was
delighted with the proceeds raised.

He said: “The figure this year is
well in line with our expectations.

“We’re so grateful to the people
who support us in what we do, especially when money is so
tight.

"All the money raised goes back to
local and international charities and it costs us absolutely
nothing to put this event on.”

Yellow ducks cost £1 and the
corporate red ducks, all purchased by locally-based companies, cost
£25 each.
