Crews battle blaze in Aylesford

Fire crews have finally left the scene of a massive blaze at a DIY store in Aylesford but will be returning today, Monday.

Police are treating the fire at a retail park on Saturday as suspicious.

Firefighters and police were initially unable to get into the store as it was not deemed safe. Crews are expected to return today to check for hotspots.

Firefighters have spent the night at a Kent retail park after a huge fire yesterday afternoon.

Eighty firefighters from across the county tackled the blaze at Homebase at the Quarry Wood industrial estate in Aylesford.

Neighbouring stores were evacuated, the A20 was closed and people living nearby were told to stay indoors and keep doors and windows shut.

The fire had started in a centre aisle within the centre of the store at around 12.45pm and was well alight within minutes. Crews had to tackle the fire from the outside as temperatures have reached up to 600 degrees inside, causing steelwork to buckle.

Staff at Homebase and neighbouring stores including Comet, Carpetright and Currys were all evacuated within a few minutes.

Crews used aerial equipment to spray the core of the fire to cool it down, and sprayed water onto the neighbouring store and walls to prevent it spreading.

The cause is under investigation, but no-one was injured.

  • Officers are also investigating a small fire at a B&Q store in Larkfield.

Staff extinguished the fire, which also yesterday broke outat lunchtime

Police are appealing for witnesses to both incidents.
