Death crash driver gets seven years

A MOTORIST who was “blitzed” on drink and drugs when his car smashed into and killed a train driver cycling to work at Ramsgate station has been jailed for seven years.

The driver, Dean Farmer, 24, was also banned from driving for 10 years. The man who died was David Adshead, a married man with two children, who lived at Margate.

It was Farmer, from Blackheath, who described himself as being blitzed, having drunk with his brother about 22 miniature bottles of whisky and brandy and five bottles of beer. He had also smoked cannabis and taken two Ecstasy tablets.

But Farmer denied being the driver of the car and even tried to blame his brother.

Maidstone Crown Court heard how Mr Adshead, 34, was cycling along Ramsgate Road, Margate, at 5am on July 23 last year when the BMW hurtled into him at a speed of up to 53mph.

Farmer drove off leaving him dying or dead on the grass verge. When breathalysed about an hour later he was found to be three times over the legal driving limit.

Farmer was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving after pleading not guilty to the charge and an alternative of causing death without due care and attention having consumed excess alcohol.

Farmer admitted driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, with excess alcohol and no insurance.
