Detectives hunt carpet conmen

TWO men who offered to carpet a house for £1,800 left after being given the money without doing any work. The conmen called at the home of a 68-year-old man in Birchington and told him they were working in the area, had some carpet spare and offered to completely relay the flooring.

Police say the men measured up the rooms, and the householder went to the bank to draw out the cash. PC Adrian Smith said:”The men made an excuse to leave the house but promised they would return very soon. They did't.

“We advise people to be vary wary of any unsolicited caller who offers an apparent bargain deal.” Police want to know if the men, who drove a red Mazda van, have approached other residents.

One man is in his late 40s or early 50s. The other is in his mid 30s. Both are stocky with short brown hair. The called on the Birchington man on Thursday morning.

Anyoe with information is asked to telephone Thanet police on 01843 231055.
