A MURDER-STYLE investigation was under way today after the suspicious death of a pensioner.

Joan Isabelle Smyth, 82, was found dead at her flat in Wakeley Road, Rainham. Police believe she died on late on Monday or early on Tuesday. Officers launched the investigation following the results of a post mortem.

A local man has been arrested and is helping police with their inquiries.

A spokesman said police were unable at this stage to reveal how Ms Smyth died. But they said she was a respected figure in the community who was generous and handed out sweets to people.

Medway police are keen to establish her movements on Monday from early morning through to the late evening.

Det Ch Insp Matthew Nix said: "We believe Joan shopped in the Rainham precinct area at some point during that day. Any information members of the public could give us about her movements would be of great assistance our investigation."
