A driver hurt in a smash on the A2 last week has died, police revealed today.

The victim, taken to hospital by South East Coast Ambulance Service, died of his injuries on Monday.

Officers investigating the incident have renewed their appeal for witnesses.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "The collision happened last Wednesday on the London-bound carriageway of the A2 near Wilmington, Dartford.

"Witnesses reported seeing a silver-coloured Mazda 626 travelling in lane three of the London-bound carriageway at about 9.15pm when it suddenly veered across all three lanes and the hard shoulder, then struck a lamp post before ending up in a roadside hedge.

"The man driving the Mazda, its only occupant, was taken to hospital by South East Coast Ambulance Service where he died of his injuries on Monday."

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

The road was closed for around four hours while officers from Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out a forensic examination.
