Fighting in the streets

Cavaliers and Roundheads will clash on the streets of Maidstone tomorrow when the Battle of Maidstone is re-created on the spot where it happened 360 years ago to the day.

The re-enactment by the Sealed Knot will take place between 11am and noon in Gabriel’s Hill, at the junction with High Street, Gabriel’s Hill and Week Street, and along as far as the junction with Earl Street in Week Street.

Soldiers will also be mingling with crowds attending the craft and food fair in the High Street between 10.30am and 4pm, and will be taking part in a living history tableau in Maidstone Museum, St Faith’s Street, where there will be a field hospital with a surgeon treating wounds, between 12.30pm and 4pm.

Tonight(Saturday)at 7.30pm there will be Proms in the Park at the Riverstage, Whatman Park, with a battle theme, and music including the 1812 Overture.

The Battle of Maidstone 1648 events are sponsored by the Kent Messenger, Palace Estates, Gullands, Mall Chequers, Maidstone Studios, The Stone Shop, Town Centre Management, Maidstone council, Royal Star Arcade, dha planning, Gallagher Group and G Forces.
