Firefighters were called to a Rochester prison yesterday (Thursday) after an electrical fault caused a small fire.

A crew from Thames-side went to the scene in Fort Road at about 3.45pm as Strood firefighters were training in another area.

The fire broke out in a water heater in Rochester Young Offenders Institute's chapel.

The institute houses about 600 people

Governor John Wilson said: "The fire was an inconsequential, non-prisoner-related electrical fault."

Staff at the prison extinguished the blaze and the fire and rescue service were called as part of the institute's safety procedure.

One pump was sent and crews helped staff ventilate the building. They left soon after.
