Fire crews spent two hours tackling a fire in Shepway this morning.

The blaze broke out in a ground floor flat in Glasgow House, Highland Road, at 2.14am, and spread to the property above.

Both flats were empty.

Four pumps, from Maidstone, Headcorn and Lenham, attended the fire and had extinguished the flames by 4.23am.

Police are investigating.

Kent Fire and Rescue also attended another fire at 6.18am this morning in Pheasant Lane - a small country lane between the Sutton Road and Loose Road.

Crews extinguished an abandoned car which had been set alight.

Firefighters in Medway were also called out last night as a barn filled with hay near a golf club went up in flames.

In Gravesend there was another unconnected incident this morning in which families were trapped in their homes when fire broke out under a block of flats.
