Gillingham development squad player Mahlon Romeo has been added to the squad for the League 2 trip to Port Vale.

Injuries to three members of the first team, along with a suspension for Bradley Dack, meant that boss Martin Allen has taken the opportunity to have a closer look at the 17-year-old.

Romeo was recently released by Arsenal and has since joined the youth ranks at Priestfield.

The teenage right-back played for the development squad at Beechings Cross earlier this month when the Gills held Watford to a 2-2 draw.

Allen has seen the youngster twice and it was enough for the Gills boss to select him to join the travelling squad heading for the top of the table clash at Vale Park.

The Gills boss said: “I have seen him in games twice now and he looks a terrific prospect.

“He is just 17 but he will be travelling with the team.”
