A defiant funeral director is refusing to remove a coffin from his window after residents complained it was "macabre".

Trading standards officers visited Terry Allen to tell him people are unhappy about the wicker casket display just one week after he opened his Rainham branch.

But Medway Council ruled that no trading laws are being broken at the premises, in Maidstone Road.

Mr Allen said: "We thought people would be pleased that the building was being used as a business and that it didn't remain derelict.

"I'm sorry if I have offended anyone, but I'm not removing the coffin from our window."

He and his wife Lynn run other funeral homes in the Towns. Their branches in Rochester and Strood have coffins in the window, which have not led to any complaints.
