The Dartford Crossing has been closed tonight as Storm Barney hits Kent.

Gales are sweeping across the county after a yellow weather warning came into force earlier today.

Gusts of up to 70mph are expected inland, and speeds of up to 80mph could affect exposed coastlines.

Ferry crossings have been affected, with delays of up to one hour on DFDS Seaways and P&O between Dover and Dunkerque, and an hour and a half on P&O between Dover and Calais.

Just after 7pm the Dartford Crossing was closed to traffic due to the high winds.

Met Office experts say there is a risk of disruption to travel, with gusts strong enough to bring down trees and damage weaker buildings.

A tree has already blown down in Hernhill near Faversham, and is blocking Staple Street.

A spokesman said the worst of the winds will sweep rapidly eastwards during the evening.

The warning lasts from 4pm until 2am tomorrow.
