Who do you think you are? Michael Schumacher?

Well, yes actually. The traditional traffic cop’s greeting was given an unusual spin on Sunday when the German star of motorsport and former Ferrari driver was involved in an accident in Lydd.

Schumacher is believed to have been on his way to pick up a private jet at Lydd Airport when the van he was driving hit a barrier being carried by Martin Kingham, of Millfield Motors.

Mr Kingham was putting up the security barrier outside the garage in Harden Road when a Fiat Ducato came past and clunked the end of the post he was moving.

It damaged the van’s wing mirror and sent him sprawling across the bonnet of a Kia Sedona.

It happened at about 3.45pm.

A policeman got involved in helping the parties swap insurance details, as is usual in a road accident, as the Ducato bore the scars of the tangle.

Mr Kingham said: “The copper came into the office and said the guy’s claiming to be Michael Schumacher and I said 'he doesn’t half look like Michael Schumacher’.

“The copper said we’re just going to confirm it with some ID.

“Twenty minutes after he left, his jet took off. The van was left in the car park at the airport.

“I thought, nobody is ever going to believe it. I’ve got his address though.”

A police statement on the incident said: “Officers were called to a minor collision in Lydd after Kent Police received a call at about 3.45pm on Sunday.

“The officers assessed the situation, spoke to two men at the scene, helped them to exchange details and no further police involvement is required.”
