Defender Matt Fish admits the pressure is on to perform as Gillingham’s injured players slowly return to action.
Fish (pictured) has been one of several players taking an enforced break due to injury this season but has started the last two games for the Gills.
An impressive return in the 3-0 win against Cheltenham last Saturday was followed by a performance in the 1-0 midweek defeat against Crawley he admits wasn’t good enough. It has left him and others sweating on their place in the team.
"I don’t know if I will be playing Saturday now," admitted the former Crystal Palace youngster.
"We lost the game and I didn’t do so well. I’ve done okay but not on the ball. I have to prove myself in training now and there are a few positions up for grabs, especially with players coming back.
"You want to give the gaffer a hard decision and he needs to pick a side he feels is going to go and win. It’s good competition."
An ankle injury left Fish sidelined for eight weeks. He returned with a 90-minute work-out in a reserve game and was thrown straight back into the side to face Cheltenham last Saturday. He said: "I was a little surprised (to go straight back in) because Jack Evans has done well.
"The gaffer has given me the chance and hopefully I can prove I’m worthy of that place."
The Gills were unable to replicate their performance at Cheltenham when they met Crawley at Priestfield on Tuesday night.
Fish, 23, said: "Everyone was in high spirits after the weekend but I don’t think we took that into the game. Personally, I wasn’t the best on the ball, I don’t know what it was. We didn’t get going."
