“We got what we deserved” said Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler following Saturday’s defeat to Lincoln City.
The visitors took the lead after just nine minutes and from then on made life difficult for the Gills by defending in numbers.
Hessenthaler said: “I’m really disappointed but we brought it on ourselves. The first half performance certainly wasn’t good enough.
“Teams know we are a team who should be up there this season and will come here and use it in their favour. They set up with just one up top (in attack) and they did it very well, with (Albert) Jarrett just behind.
“The goal could have been avoided and when they got the goal they were always going to sit in there and try and frustrate us. We got what we deserved in the end; there were no excuses.
“Second half the boys had a right go and at the end Bayo hit the post.”
Despite still waiting for their first win, with just three league games gone Hessenthaler knows it’s important not to get too frustrated,
“We are not going to be too down on ourselves,” he said.
“If you start doing that after three games you’ve got no chance. What you’ve got to do is stay positive.”
