Greggs is recalling one of its most popular products after a packaging error deemed it a “possible health risk”.
The popular bakery chain is warning some of its steak bakes contain sausage, bean and cheese melts after being incorrectly packed.
The Food Standards Agency says some sulphites were not declared on the label.
And it adds the product could pose a “health risk” for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites.
The product recall only applies to the Greggs two-pack of steak bakes sold exclusively in the supermarket chain Iceland with a best-before date of May 19.
Kent County Council’s Trading Standards team shared the warning on social media, which attracted dozens of comments from residents.
Maura McFall said: “My son-in-law is awaiting a kidney transplant and is on dialysis.
“He has been told to avoid certain sulphites and they have to check food labels very carefully.
“They are deadly to some groups of people whose bodies are vulnerable.”
Tina Mills commented: “I’ve just thrown it out.”
Wayne Parker joked: “Or just send it to me – I'll take my chances.”
The FSA says Greggs contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.
“If you have bought the above product and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites do not consume it,” the government agency said.
“Instead return it to your nearest Iceland store from where it was bought for a full refund.”
Sulphites are a group of substances – including sulphur dioxide and sodium or potassium metabisulphite – found naturally in some foods.
But they are also used as preservatives and bleaching agents to slow down how fast they go off and to lighten their colour.
